Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

Unfortunately there seem to be many fears and myths surrounding the hypnotic state, which actually has a long and honourable history both as an adjunct to orthodox medicine and a powerful means to relieve emotional distress.

Perhaps the simplest way to describe Hypnosis is as a pleasant suspension of awareness somewhere between wake and sleep (rather like daydreaming) enhancing the responsiveness of the subconscious mind to positive and helpful suggestions, giving access to subconscious resources and facilitating the remarkably rapid analytical treatment of conflicts, fears, traumas and hurts.

There is no question of being controlled or manipulated. Nobody can be made to do anything they do not want to do and with a few exceptions, anybody can be taught to enter the hypnotic state at will.

Hypnotherapy

Suggestion therapy makes use of heightened susceptibility to beneficial suggestions in order to change bad habits for good ones and to build confidence. It is known particularly for its high success rate in helping people to stop smoking, to change eating habits and so lose weight, to control nail biting, pre-test nerves and nervousness in making business presentations and so on. Suggestion therapy and self-hypnosis form part of a range of techniques that are effective in enhancing sporting performance (see also A Mind to Ride).

Normally only one or two sessions are necessary and many people are amazed at the ease with which they change their unwanted habit. A back up audio CD or cassette is supplied to be used at your own convenience over the first few weeks for reinforcing sessions. In the event of a third (booster) session being required, it would be charged at half-fee rate if taken within three months.

Analytical therapy can be summarised briefly as the doctrine of 'cause and effect' - every symptom must have a cause. Hypno-analysis brings about lasting release by revealing the underlying emotional causes and providing an opportunity to re-evaluate the emotional perceptions and associated negative belief patterns that contribute to present day problems, disabilities and diseases.

People undergoing the analytical process find it fascinating as a route to greater self-knowledge and understanding. Biofeedback can be used to objectively monitor progress although it is probably fair to say that whilst benefits are felt during therapy, problems tend to be resolved in one or a series of experiences toward the end.

Some problems respond especially well to Hypno-analysis and I am particularly proud of my success with clients suffering nervous tension/anxiety and panic attacks. The technique is used extensively within this practice however and has proven to be very effective in helping with problems as apparently diverse as Compulsions, Phobias, Nightmares, Insomnia, Depression, Drink Problems, Sexual Problems, Allergies, Asthma, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Migraine, some Skin Disorders*, etc.

Due to the very individual and varying requirements of analytical therapy, it can be unwise to speculate on the exact nature and duration of the process. A general guideline would be to anticipate weekly sessions of 50 minutes each extending over an eight to twelve week period.

* Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy and can only be used in the treatment of diagnosed medical conditions in collaboration with your medical practitioner.
